Soccer Teams in New York Soccer being one if not the most popular sports in the world attracts players of all ages from different countries. There are soccer teams and clubs from almost all countries in the world, from the most affluent European countries to even the poorest nations in the world. Soccer is popular in the United States and there are plenty of teams from the different states that are part of Major League Soccer and the other soccer leagues. New York, a dynamic state, is home to many soccer teams. The New York Athletic Club has a soccer team that is part of the Women’s Premiere Soccer League. The New York Athletic Club is a premiere and exclusive athletic club based in New York and was established in 1868. The Club offers extensive resources and facilities to its members in various sports including boxing, wrestling, fencing and others. Membership to the exclusive club is strictly by invitation only. The NYAC is one of the sports world’s strongest forces with such notable members as the late John F. Kennedy Jr. and other popular sports and public figures. Under the W League, there is a team from New York called NY Magic Wild Cats. The team plays in the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference. The team aims to provide the facilities, resources and the right environment to develop women’s soccer in the United States. The team is not just for professional women’s player but has also been developing youth teams composed of girls aged 12 to 16 from New York. Part of the Major League Soccer is the Red Bulls New York. The name is actually based in New Jersey and not New York City. The game was originally known as the New York/ New Jersey Metro Stars but in 1998 the team became known as simply the MetroStars. In 2006, the team was bought by RedBull GmbH, an Austrian energy drink company and became known as the New York Red Bulls. The team is the first Major League Soccer team to win outside of North America. In 2004, the team won in the La Manga Cup. |
